People living with Parkinson's in Chester and the surrounding area are being invited to try walking tennis, a gentle and social version of the game, at new weekly sessions that have launched just across the border at the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre.

A friendly way to get active

The sessions are delivered by the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre and are designed to help more people try walking tennis in a fun and social way. They launched in July and run weekly on Thursday mornings, from 10am to 11am, and all ages and abilities are welcome.

Experienced instructors lead each session, walking newcomers through the basics, and all equipment is provided. Carers and relatives are welcome to join in or simply watch, and there are teas and coffees on hand. Participants are advised to wear comfortable active wear and footwear suitable for tennis, and to bring water, snacks and any medication they may need on the day.

The benefits

Walking tennis can bring a range of benefits for people living with Parkinson's, including:

  • Improved balance and coordination
  • Better strength, flexibility and mobility
  • A greater sense of wellbeing and mindfulness
  • Better memory and cognitive skills
  • More social interaction
  • Improved speech and communication

Rob Ward, Programme Manager at the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre, said: "Come and try our new weekly walking tennis session, no experience needed at all, we have a warm friendly environment within the centre and it will be a great opportunity to get active at your own pace and most importantly socialise with people over a coffee or tea."
